I bought this particular disc drive because it specifically mentions the model of my netbook in the product title (ASUS EEE) so i was sure it would be compatible. And yet, using the USB cable that is provided with the disc drive (actually, two are provided "for extra power" despite the fact that the drive only has one USB slot) was completely ineffective at getting my netbook to recognise the device and start running the driver. The instructions are in a jumbled form of English that has obviously been translated from Chinese and are of no help.
The only way i found to make the drive actually work on my computer was to use a printer connector USB cable (as there is a slot on the drive this shape) which finally seemed to provide enough power to start the driver running.
Still i encountered more problems trying to play DVDs, because the Windows Media software required is not included with netbooks at all... No fault of the disc drive but if you're buying specifically to use...

It does what it says it does
I ordered this as a dvd player as i have number of region 1 dvd's..it is simple to use, just 2 wires to connect and so far has worked perfectly. i have windows 7 and using a sony vaio.

Exactly as described
Bought this item because the internal CD drive on my laptop had 'died'. I only used it for uploading CDs to my MP3 player - or for burning CDs, so didn't need anything too high spec. This item does exactly what it is meant to do. I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP as the operating system. The drive was 'plug and play' - no issues, and it works fine without the additional USB power connection - so only one USB connection needed. My laptop has four USB connections anyway, so it wasn't going to be a problem if I had to use two. I only got it yesterday, and so far have played one CD and burned one CD - but it did both fine, so I'm hopeful that it will continue to behave. I haven't tried a DVD in it yet as I don't watch DVDs on my laptop. The drive itself is small and neat, and looks well. Would definitely recommend for anyone requiring a simple CD RW drive.
