Synology DS213+ DiskStation 1TB (2 x 500GB) 2 Bay High Performance All-in-One Desktop NAS Server

Synology DS213+ DiskStation 1TB (2 x 500GB) 2 Bay High Performance All-in-One Desktop NAS Server

a great Piece of Kit
I bought this device after several hours of researching NAS systems. I was torn between a QNAP (As I currently already own an older model and it’s been great) and the DS213+ which a friend of mine had recently purchased and raved about. I was fortunate in the fact my friend allowed my remote access to his system. I had a really good play on with it and in the end took the plunge.
I ordered my unit form Amazon and arrived in less than 48 hours of ordering. My main issues, whilst setting the system up, were nothing to do with the NAS; more to do with Network Issues and my VirginMedia Superhub. In the end I deactivated the SuperHub as a router and changed it into Modem Mode (Which gives you an IP Address of 192.168.100.1 – Not 192.168.1.1 as you’d expect) I connected the device to my wireless router and I ran the supplied software on a Mac (works on a Windows/Linux too) and it saw the device straight away. I accessed the control panel from a web browser and...

Synology DS213+ DiskStation 1TB (2 x 500GB) 2 Bay High Performance All-in-One Desktop NAS Server

DS213+ easy and efficient
Not being an expert, I did some research in magazines and online. Synology came up several times and well rated. Selected DS213+ because is latest version (after DS212+). It is easy to insert the 2 hard disk, it is easy to push ON button, it is easy to follow the instructions online, it looks complicated when the box comes to your place, but at the end of the day it is easy and fun. What else, I stored all media, personal files, and I can access these via Ipad, and top of the top, via media share (TV must be connected to router). I recommend a RAID 1 set up when using 2 disk (1 disk copies to the second one for safety and backup purpose). Delivery of Amazon was perfect and speedy, no issue. I need other's comments online to build trust before buying, I hope this review helps you too. Enjoy!. Antoine

Freecom 56144 16GB DataBar USB 2.0 Flash Drive

Excellent little peice of kit!
OK...let's cut to the chase, the main thing that you want to know when buying a new flash drive is that it's the genuine article and not a fake, as a number of them on sale are. Well, the good news is that this one really is the genuine article. I've filled it with 60gb, worth of mp3s to play on my micro hi-fi system, It reads them and plays them perfectly, time after time, and there's still room for more! It has what I consider a not unreasonable speed for loading it, about 15mbs, it varies from time to time, but not by much. And I've now got 2 of therm, so I'm set up for a good while! If I need any more, I'll be looking at another one of these little beauties.

Freecom 56144 16GB DataBar USB 2.0 Flash Drive

Excellent lightweight design, good performance. Top value
This compares well to the many other flash drives I have tried.
Freecom drives appear well constructed from good materials.
Speed to transfer files from PC is quick.
Works great with my WD TV live to play movies without stuttering.
It is light so doesn't put pressure on USB socket.
Top value for 32GB

Very good
A really usefully sized usb key. The transfer rate seems to be quite quick. I can recommend it. Good back up size.

Trans 500GB StoreJet2.5in

Trans 500GB StoreJet2.5in

Neat design...
I purchased because the manufacture makes a big play on how strong the case is, i.e. drop tested to US military grade standards. In fact, although very well made, the case is plastic and flexes in the middle and is not as strong as my other external HD case made from alloy, which you could stand on! The Storejet software has useful features such as back up for email and data but has confusing 2nd level menus. You can also drag and drop if you don't want to use Storejet. The USB Y adapter leads plug securely into USB ports and run the 500gb HD silently without the need for a separate power supply. In practise if you have a modern PC/Laptop, you only need to use the main USB lead as the second is for power only. I like the neat design and its light compact portability and can highly recommend it, but its a little expensive given the plastic construction.

Transcend is a Godsend
I use an external hard drive to store my thousands of precious photos. After two disastrous experiences with desktop external hard drives, the Transcend is a godsend. Since my Western Digital external hard drive died suddenly after only two years, and the Seagate replacement produced unacceptably loud clicking sounds so I couldn't concentrate on my work, I was in the market for something different.

When I studied reviews for desktop external hard drives nothing stood out for reliability, so I looked at portable devices on Amazon and was immediately attracted by Transcend products. When I looked at reviews for the 500GB StoreJet 2.5 hard drive I was glad to see great reviews for it. I could therefore approach purchasing one with renewed confidence - which I badly needed after my previous experiences.

Right from the start I was impressed. The product was intelligently packaged for protection, neatness and attractiveness. The enclosed literature was absolutely...

I got this portable drive about a month ago. I've been delighted with it.
Firstly, I've had no issues. Secondly, the back up software that comes installed on the drive is very handy. I can pre-select the directories or specific files I want to be backed up. Then I just press the button on the drive itself to back up the files.

Only negative was that the drive came formatted as FAT32 and I'm using it to store some files that exceed 4gb so I had to reformat the drive as NTFS when I got it initially. Aside from that I'm happy with my purchase.

Could be a great product but...
I received a 16GB version of this for Christmas. Potentially it is a great design as the housing seems very solid and attractive. However, as soon as I opened the packet the USB part slid under its own weight into the open position, leaving the connector exposed when the device is hanging from a key ring etc. When pushed back into its shell, it doesn't grip or latch, and slides out again as soon as it is picked up. This effectively means that the device, which if its design worked would be very well protected, isn't protected at all! As I have only seen one other reviewer mention this problem, it seems I have been unlucky, but the manufacturer should improve their quality control.

QNAP TS-212 Turbo 6TB Network Attached Storage with Built-In UPNP/ DLNA Media Server

Very flexible, very reliable, great box that continues to delight
It appears this NAS box is loved or hated on the reviews, I personally love it.

I imagine some of the difficulties experienced by other users could be a faulty box, their other equipment, a different firmware version or different needs. But with my set up (iphones, ipad, macbooks, imac, ps3 and windows PCs) I now have a great experience.

I now have my NAS set up to do the following things with no issues
- Stream all types of media to ipad, iphone, macbook, ps3, Apple TV, Sony Network TV, windows PC
- Be my time machine backup for two macbooks
- fileshare (copyright free or freeware) files
- Set up as RAID 1, so I have two copies of data to reduce risk of data loss

I've some bigger drives on order, after which I will migrate over my iPhoto library, and back up my iMac.

Good points
- Quiet, uses hardly any power, MUCH QUICKER and more likely to stream video than a USB drive connected to a network router
- Unlike...

QNAP TS-212 Turbo 6TB Network Attached Storage with Built-In UPNP/ DLNA Media Server

Incredible piece of kit
Ok, where to start? If you are reading this then you must be thinking about a NAS server. I'll try and review my one as best possible.
I researched these (my one is a Qnap 212-TS Turbo) for about 2 months along with the Synology 212J and as far as I'm concerned this IS THE BEST.

Just a short note to also say I bumped into the I.T. lads at work, told them I was getting one of these and they said they are "incredible, do everything and anything and they install them for all their client" - Gotta say, I felt a lot better after this as I knew I'd chosen the right piece of kit.

So, out of the box we have the enclosure. Nice looking, tidy, solid piece of kit with plenty of flashing lights on the front. I went for ordering two seperate 3TB drives (Seagate 3.5 inch 3TB Barracuda Desktop Hard Drive) after I looked up the compatibility on the Qnap website. If you are wanting this type of...

QNAP TS-212 Turbo 6TB Network Attached Storage with Built-In UPNP/ DLNA Media Server

Some fundamental problems
I advised my Brother-in-law to get this product so that I could install NAS on his home network to provide safety and a central storage repository for all the family. The hard drives (2*1TB) were purchased separately and I took on the responsibility for making sure the whole thing worked. I spent a very frustrating weekend trying to get the system operational and realised that there are some fundamental issues with this product.

The instructions and Youtube videos imply that it is a trivial job to install the hard drives and get the unit operational. That was not my experience. I followed the start up instructions to download and install the latest firmware and following apparently successful update the unit refused to initialise. After spending hours on the internet and attempting all of the procedures provided on the QNAP website, I never obtained the steady green light showing the unit was ready for use. As soon as you look on the web you find that this is a very common...
